A system is unstable if it consists of or is dominated by a regenerative feedback loop, i.e. if the number of negative correlators is even (positive feedback).[1]

Of note, in unstable systems the structure that generates the behaviour is in any case the same, i.e. there is an even number of negative relationships resulting in positive (regenerative) feedback.
